What is SPF?

Τι είναι το SPF

What is SPF, and why is it important?;

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how well a sunscreen protects the skin from UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn. An SPF of 30, for example, means that it will take 30 times longer for your skin to burn than it would if you weren’t wearing sunscreen. However, SPF does not provide protection against UVA rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin, causing premature aging and increasing the risk of skin cancer.

Broad-spectrum protection

It is vital to choose sunscreens that offer «broad-spectrum» protection, shielding your skin from both UVB and UVA rays. This label ensures that you’re protecting your skin from the full spectrum of solar radiation, helping to reduce the risk of skin damage.

Examples and Everyday Use of Sunscreen

One example of how SPF is applied is in a daily skincare routine. Many people limit their use of sunscreen to the summer months or when they are out in the sun, but UV rays penetrate clouds and can affect the skin even during the winter months or when you’re indoors near windows.

A daily sunscreen with SPF 30 is ideal for most people. However, if you spend several hours outdoors, choose a higher SPF and opt for water-resistant products if you sweat or swim.

How to Apply Sunscreen Properly

To get the full protection from your sunscreen, it’s important to apply a sufficient amount and reapply it every two hours, especially after swimming or heavy sweating. Don’t forget areas such as your ears, the back of your neck, and your hands, which are often overlooked.

We hope this was helpful.
